Business Fire Safety

This week is business safety week aimed at making small to medium businesses aware of their fire safety obligations and what they need to do.

We are seeing more businesses starting to return to their premises weekly with Covid assessments now the norm. Whilst it is important that these are carried out and a safe environment created for staff and visitors fire safety obligations have begun to take a back seat and not been treat as a priority. This then leads to the risk of business owners been prosecuted under the Fire Safety Order or worse lose their business entirely through fire both of which are preventable if the correct measures are taken. As with everything fire safety it all starts with the fire risk assessment. All Fire Risk Assessments must be regularly reviewed but it is especially important that they are reviewed due to the impact of COVID-19 on businesses due to Covid measures out in place inadvertently effecting fire safety measures such as exits.

Regardless of the recent situation, and whether changes have had to be made to business in response to it, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order was not and has not changed, reduced or been removed.

It remains a legal requirement and you could be prosecuted should you neglect those requirements. Things you should be considering in your business in relation to fire safety:

  • Review your fire risk assessment

  • Housekeeping

  • Means of Escape

  • Fire Alarms and Firefighting Equipment

  • Staff Training

  • One way systems

  • Fire Exits

  • Fire Doors

  • Fire Assembly Points

  • Site Specific Risks

The above gives you an indication of what areas you should be paying attention to all of which should be considered within your fire risk assessment.

Our blog post Returning to Work Safely goes into those areas in a little more depth, how Covid measures can effect them and what you should be considering.
